What is Gas Chromatography?
Gas chromatography (GC) is an analytical technique used to separate and detect chemical components in a sample mixture to determine their presence and/or content. These chemicals are usually organic molecules or gases. In order to be successfully analyzed by GC, these components must be volatile (typically with molecular weights below 1250 Da) and thermally stable so that they do not degrade in the GC system.
What is the working principle of Gas Chromatography?
Gas Chromatography (GC) is a separation and analytical technique based on the equilibrium of the distribution of the sample components between the stationary phase and the mobile phase, and its working principle can be divided into the following key components:
1. Basic Components
Carrier Gas (Mobile Phase): Inert gas (e.g., Nitrogen, Helium, Hydrogen), which carries the sample through the chromatographic column.
Inlet system: The sample is vaporized and introduced into the carrier gas stream (e.g., microsyringe, autosampler).
Chromatographic Columns:
Packed Columns: Filled with inert solid particles coated with stationary phase.
Capillary columns: Long, thin quartz tubes (0.1~0.5 mm in diameter and 10~100 m in length) coated with stationary phase.
Stationary phase: High-boiling liquid (e.g. polysiloxane) or solid adsorbent, which determines the separation selectivity.
Detector: Detects components and outputs signals (e.g. FID, TCD, ECD, etc.).
Data processing system: Records and analyzes chromatograms.
